cabled ankle socks

1 skein Claudia Handpaint Origials Sportweight in "Plumlicious" (about 225 yards of superwash merino); Louet Gems Opal is a good substitute
1 set of five US 2 (2.75 mm) DPNs
cable needle (or use a DPN)

gauge - about 6 st/inch

knit to fit JennyRaye's feet; that is, Length: 10"; Circum: 8.25" Ankle 8". Upsize by adding 16 more stitches and including an extra cable pattern repeat.

Cast on 48 stitches.
Rows 1-3: (k4, p4) across
Row 4: (slip 2 to cable needle (or forgo the cable needle altogether like I did) and hold to front. K2, K2 from cable needle, p4, k4, p4) across
Rows 5-7: (k4,p4)*
Row 8: (k4, p4, sl2 to cable needle and hold to front, k2, k2 from cable needle, p4) across
Row 9: (k4, p4) across
Repeat rows 4 through 9 until you've reached the desired ankle length. For JennyRaye's socks, that length was about 4 inches.

Heel flap:
(method: continue cables for heel flap, keeping one purl stitch on either side of the cables)
Work across the first 23 stitches, leaving one purl stitch unknit; move this stitch to the heel section. Continue in cable pattern above, slipping first stitch of each row. When necessary, cable on the wrong side by slipping 2 purl stitches to cable needle and holding to front, p2, p2 from needle. Continue until heel flap measures 3 inches.

Heel turn:
Row 1: sl1, k13, k2 tog, k1, turn.
Row 2: sl1, p4, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 3: sl1, k to stitch before gap, k2tog, k1, turn. Row 4: sl1, p to stitch before gap, p2tog, p1, turn.
Continue rows 3 and 4 until all stitches have been worked.

Foot:
Working in stockinette, continue across heel and pick up slipped stitches and any stitches necessary to close gaps. The middle of the heel is now the beginning of the round. On next round, knit to last slipped/picked up stitches and k2tog. Knit across instep and ssk at the first pair of slipped/picked up stitches. Knit one round even. Continue until sock is desired circumference (in this case, 40 stitches). Work even until foot is 2 inches short of desired length.

Toe decreases:
Divide stitches on four needles. Knit to last three stitches of needle one and k2tog, k1. K1, ssk on needle 2. Knit to last three stitches of needle 3 and k2tog, k1. K1, ssk on needle 4. Knit next round even. Continue until half of the stitches have been decreased, then repeat decrease row only until 16 stitches remain. Kitchener closed.

If you find any mistakes or have questions, please let me know! This was written after I had sent out the socks, so it's more of a concept than a proper pattern.
